Suriya’s Karuppu and Suriya 46: A Release Date Showdown?

LIK – Dude Scenario for Karuppu – Suriya 46?

Film release calendars have become quite uncertain lately. Often, movies expected to arrive sooner face delays, while projects that began production later reach screens ahead of them. This pattern recently played out with Pradeep Ranganathan’s features. His film LIK (Love Insurance Kompany) was originally set for August 2025, with Dude planned for October 2025. By December, Dude had premiered on schedule, but LIK is now targeting a February 2026 release.

While no official reasons have been given, industry observers point to post-production hold-ups and, more significantly, a dip in digital streaming agreements. Filmmakers are finding that OTT offers are not as profitable as they once were. If offers do not meet their financial hopes, producers often choose to wait for improved terms. After a digital deal is secured, the streaming platform frequently determines the theatrical release date, planning its content slots far ahead. This dynamic contributes to the growing unpredictability of release dates. This situation reportedly impacted LIK and Dude, and now Suriya’s upcoming movies appear to be in a similar predicament.

Following the completion of Kanguva, Suriya started filming Karuppu. This movie features Trisha alongside him and is directed by RJ Balaji, known for his first directorial, Mookuthi Amman (released as Ammoru Thalli in Telugu). During the Karuppu shoot, Suriya also began work on a direct Telugu film, currently known as Suriya 46, under the direction of Venky Atluri. Suriya recently finished filming for Suriya 46.

Karuppu was originally slated for a Diwali 2025 debut. However, reports suggest its release was postponed because the producers could not secure an OTT partner willing to meet their asking price. With filming nearly done, the team is now considering a summer release window.

A new development has emerged: Suriya 46 has also finished production, with its creators aiming for a Summer 2026 release. Netflix has acquired the digital rights for this film. This follows the strong viewership performance of Venky Atluri’s last movie, Lucky Baskhar, on the streaming service. The digital agreement for Suriya 46 is reportedly seamless and has set new records.

Reports indicate that the Karuppu team reached out to the Suriya 46 producers, requesting them to modify their release schedule, given that Karuppu also seeks a summer slot. Currently, the outlook for Karuppu appears challenging, as Suriya 46 is expected to proceed and premiere first. If this happens, Karuppu might need to launch in early 2026 to avoid further postponing its theatrical debut. We are waiting to see which of Suriya 46 or Karuppu will reach cinemas first.

Karuppu features Suriya, Trisha, and other actors. RJ Balaji directs this project, produced by S R Prakash Babu and S R Prabhu for Dream Warrior Pictures, with music composed by Sai Abhyankkar. Suriya 46 is expected to be titled Vishwanathan and Sons. Its cast includes Suriya, Mamitha Baiju, and Raveena Tandon. Venky Atluri directs, and Naga Vamsi produces under Sithara Entertainments, with GV Prakash providing the music.
