Rajinikanth Failed to Beat Vijay’s Record
Superstar Rajinikanth’s classic film, Padayappa, was re-released to mark his 75th birthday. The team actively promoted the movie’s return to cinemas across Tamil film circles, hoping to attract large audiences. However, its box office performance did not match the collections achieved by Thalapathy Vijay’s re-released hit, Ghilli.
While Padayappa’s re-release found success among its peers, it did not manage to exceed expectations or establish new benchmarks within this category. Ghilli continues to hold the top spot as the highest-grossing South Indian re-release, having earned ₹30 crore. Rajinikanth’s beloved film now appears unlikely to reach that figure, as its theatrical run is drawing to a close.
The film’s collections over three days are as follows:
- Gross in Tamil Nadu: 8.5 Cr
- Gross in Rest of India: 1.5 Cr
- Gross in Overseas: 2 Cr
- Total Gross: 12 Cr
During a promotional event, Rajinikanth hinted at a potential sequel focusing on the memorable character Neelambari. This announcement generated considerable excitement within Tamil film circles. Many anticipated that this curiosity, combined with Rajinikanth’s immense fan base, would propel Padayappa’s re-release to new heights, much like his previous films often broke box office records even during mixed or disappointing initial runs.
Despite these high hopes, Padayappa did not achieve record-breaking numbers. One possible reason for this could be the decision to limit its re-release solely to Tamil Nadu. A simultaneous re-release in Telugu-speaking regions might have boosted its overall collections, given the film’s popularity throughout South India. With its run nearing its end, Padayappa is expected to conclude with a respectable, though not historically significant, re-release performance.
KS Ravi Kumar directed Padayappa, which Arunachala Cine Creations produced. A. R. Rahman composed the music, and Ramya Krishnan and Soundarya starred as the leading ladies.
