Indian Cinema’s New Era: ₹1,000 Crore Budgets Become Reality?

Is Indian Cinema Entering a ₹1,000 Crore Budget Era?

The Indian film industry’s box office has transformed significantly in the last ten years. A ₹100 crore collection, once a huge achievement, is now dwarfed by films earning ₹1,000 crore. Today, movies reaching the ₹1,000 crore mark are simply considered blockbusters across India.

With this increase in box office success, movie production costs have also climbed dramatically. Just five years ago, a ₹100 crore budget seemed immense, with only a few exceptions like SS Rajamouli’s productions. Now, the situation is different. Many star-led, pan-Indian ventures, particularly big action movies, are reportedly costing close to ₹500 crore to make. It seems Indian cinema is slowly moving into a time of ₹1,000 crore budgets.

Among the most discussed upcoming films is ‘Varanasi’, described as India’s largest movie currently being made. SS Rajamouli directs this project, which promises his most ambitious cinematic universe to date. Mahesh Babu takes the lead, supported by Priyanka Chopra and Prithviraj Sukumaran in important roles. The initial preview generated a huge reaction, and subsequent reports indicated a budget of ₹1,300 crore. Priyanka Chopra herself confirmed these figures on the first episode of ‘The Great Indian Kapil Show Season 4’ on Netflix, surprising many with the film’s massive scope.

Another significant production drawing attention is Nitesh Tiwari’s ‘Ramayana’, produced by Namit Malhotra, who founded Prime Focus and serves as CEO of DNEG. This epic will be released in two parts, relying heavily on visual effects. Ranbir Kapoor plays Lord Rama, and Sai Pallavi portrays Sita. Namit Malhotra previously disclosed in a podcast that the total budget for both segments reaches an astonishing ₹4,000 crore, meaning each part costs approximately ₹2,000 crore.

These projects, ‘Varanasi’ and ‘Ramayana’, clearly show Indian cinema moving towards an era of thousand-crore budgets, aiming for a worldwide audience. The success, both financially and artistically, of these two movies will be vital in determining the future size and aspirations of the industry. ‘Ramayana’ is set to arrive for Diwali in 2026 and 2027, and ‘Varanasi’ is scheduled for March 2027.
