WAR 2 Telugu Losses: The Real Box Office Story

Published on:

Despite significant pre-release excitement and the star power of Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR, YRF’s spy thriller WAR 2 did not meet expectations at the box office.

Producer Naga Vamsi released the film in the Telugu states with considerable confidence. He even declared that if this movie wasn’t a blockbuster, he would no longer ask the Telugu audience to watch any future films.

Unfortunately, the film proved to be a major disappointment, with its collections falling short of what a Jr NTR movie typically earns in the Telugu states. Naga Vamsi explained that the Telugu theatrical rights for WAR 2 were acquired for ₹68 crores, not including GST. Yash Raj Films covered the GST amount before the film’s release.

Later, as distribution share collections dropped to around ₹35-40 crores, YRF reportedly refunded ₹18 crores voluntarily, according to Naga Vamsi.

Considering these figures, the net losses for the original producer, YRF, are estimated to be in the ₹10-15 crores range. This differs from social media discussions suggesting losses of ₹30-40 crores.

However, if YRF had not provided the refund, Naga Vamsi would have easily lost ₹20-25 crores. This amount includes publicity costs, a common situation for many distributors purchasing Telugu films.
