Telangana Blast: Pharma CEO Arrested After 6 Months

A significant explosion occurred in June at Sigachi Industries Limited, situated near Pashamailaram in Telangana’s Sangareddy district. This incident resulted in the deaths of 54 workers on duty. The event caused widespread concern and prompted demands for immediate legal action against the company’s management for failing to implement proper safety protocols.

Six months later, on a Saturday, BDL-Bhanur police apprehended Amit Raj Sinha, the Chief Executive Officer of Sigachi Industries Limited. He was identified as Accused No. 2 in the ongoing investigation. Following the blast on June 30th, authorities had filed a case of culpable homicide against the company’s leadership, citing negligence and disregard for safety regulations.

This arrest followed the High Court’s insistence on accountability from the management, expressed during its review of a public interest litigation submitted by retired scientists. Mr. Sinha appeared before a magistrate and received a 14-day judicial remand to Kandi Central Jail. The case involves six individuals, all associated with the same company.

The Telangana High Court had previously voiced its dissatisfaction with the slow pace of the investigation. It repeatedly questioned the lack of arrests for months after the explosion, even with witness testimonies and initial evidence available.

Recently, a technical expert committee appointed by the state government concluded that the accident resulted from negligence by Sigachi’s management. Both the Revanth Reddy government and the company management committed to providing financial assistance of 1 Crore to the families of all 54 victims, who primarily came from North Indian states.

This incident is closely related to Sigachi Pharma.
