Shocking: Avatar 3 Fails To Beat Animation Film’s Opening
Despite significant anticipation for the franchise and the record-breaking success of earlier films, James Cameron’s epic, Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third movie in the Avatar series, did not achieve the largest opening for 2025. This outcome surprised both industry experts and moviegoers.
Avatar: Fire and Ash earned a global total of $137 million on its first day. This figure, however, was not enough to claim the top debut of the year. In a surprising turn, the film was outpaced by an animated movie, Zootopia 2, on its opening day.
The main reason for this was Avatar 3’s modest start in North America, which pulled down its worldwide opening. The film collected $36 million domestically on its first day, including a quiet performance from its premiere shows.
In contrast, Zootopia 2 launched with a remarkable $150 million on November 26th. While Avatar: Fire and Ash saw a strong start in international markets, bringing in $100 million, its overall global numbers could not surpass Zootopia 2.
Even more disappointing, the third installment failed to gather even half of the opening day earnings of its predecessor. Avatar: The Way of Water, released in 2022, had a phenomenal debut with $441 million.
The first two Avatar movies each grossed over $2 billion during their full theatrical runs. For Fire and Ash to meet its ambitious box office goals, it will require a substantial turnaround in performance.
The film’s ultimate success will now rely heavily on positive audience reactions. It must perform exceptionally well on weekdays and throughout the upcoming Christmas holiday period. Reaching the $1.5 billion mark would be a major achievement for the movie.
