Ilaiyaraaja, a legendary music composer with credits on over 1000 films, recently secured a significant win in a copyright dispute. He filed a claim against Mythri Movie Makers for using his songs in Ajith’s film “Good Bad Ugly” without his consent. The latest reports confirm that the producers settled the case, paying Ilaiyaraaja 50 lakh rupees as compensation.
The producers also utilized Ilaiyaraaja’s music in the film “Dude.” They initially stated they had paid a music company holding the rights to his compositions. Despite this claim, Ilaiyaraaja pursued legal avenues, seeking appropriate compensation for the usage of his work.
Ultimately, the production house reached a compromise, agreeing to the 50 lakh rupees settlement. This follows a previous instance where Ilaiyaraaja sought 2 crore rupees from the creators of “Manjummel Boys,” eventually settling that case for 60 lakh rupees.
This outcome suggests that other music directors might follow a similar path, making it more challenging to use existing music without proper authorization in the future. Ilaiyaraaja consistently advocates for original creators to receive due recognition and payment for their musical contributions.
